Boat Sinkers

10.Have Fun

When people start into the process of being successful, whether for personal growth or starting a business, they may start by incorporating fun, but within a very short time, they realize it is hard work and the fun simply falls by the wayside.

If you look at some of the most successful people in the world such as Sam Walton, Oprah Winphrey, or Ross Perot, you will find common threads that run between all of them.  First, they started with nothing; second, they are all multi-millionaires many times over, and third, they have fun.

They enjoy life, the people around them, and even find enjoyment in the challenges.  This one element is often forgotten.  This is a crucial element for success and should be a part of your plan.

Nothing is better for a man than that he should eat and drink, and that his soul should enjoy good in his labor. This also, I saw, was from the hand of God.  Ecclesiastes 2:4

9. Open to New Ideas

Curiosity also allows you to see how things can be at different angles.  When you are set in one way things are limited because your mind is not willing to accept a different solution.  It is much like your life.  If you don’t see your life becoming any more successful than it already is then you won’t be.  If you can open your eyes to new ideas about how things can be then you are more willing to try them.

The great thing about curiosity is that when ideas do come to your mind they will be recognized also and not ignored.  When you are not curious you miss out on the important ideas because you haven’t prepared your mind to be open to them.

This also means you must be open to suggestion.  Many people offer input that you might not want to hear.  This input could have been the one thing that was what you needed to do in your life.  Be open to suggestion by allowing yourself to ask more questions and seek different answers.

8. Time

You will be really surprised at how much of your day that you waste if you keep a record of your time expenditures over the course of several days’ time.

Now don’t misunderstand me. We all need down time. We all must relax our minds as well as our bodies. We can’t be all business all the time but we can limit our unproductive or counterproductive activities.

Time is precious and time is limited. We need to make the very best use of every minute of every day that we possibly can.

7. Serving others

We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give.-Winston Churchill

Giving frees us from the familiar territory of our own needs by opening our mind to the unexplained worlds occupied by the needs of others. Barbara Bush

Of all tyrannies, a tyranny exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron’s cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience. C.S Lewis

6.Don’t Neglect Things

Especially when things are small and do not appear to have a major impact on the big picture, you need to ensure you follow through and complete your tasks.  Those little things can quickly add up to a big leak if not taken care of in a timely and efficient manner.  Even a small leak will sink a boat.

5.Pay as You Go Stay the Coarse

The bottom line here is to remember the formula for determining profit; Income – Expenses = Profit. It’s really this simple it doesn’t matter if your as big as General Motors or just a little internet business like eBiz Snap. INCOME – EXPENSES = PROFIT.

It’s great to increase income when you can but you can always find ways to decrease expenses if you look for them. When you spend less, you make more and that will blow your competitors away!

A pay as you business eliminates paying intrest. (you can tell by now I don’t like paying interest). If you like be paid promptly, pay promptly. Paying as you go is a sure way to eliminate interest charges. This is one of the big benefits of internet marketing people expect to pay for information as they go. Avoid interest charges…even a small leak will sink a boat!

Affiliate marketing is a great way to keep cost low and make money without all the overhead common with most start up businesses. There are many free and low cost marketing methods you can use to generate traffic to your affiliate link and most affiliates pay as the go too in fact if they don’t avoid them. You never know when something might go wrong at sea.  Emergency equipment will save your life and it needs to be inspected and up to date ready for use.  Business is no different always keep your records up to date.  This would include contact information, investor information, business plans, attorney information, accounting, everything you touch regarding your vision.  In addition, keep your files on your computer backed up and current.  First, you never know when you are going to be asked for a specific document and need to provide quick turn-around.  Second, computers do crash and it would be a disaster if all of your information were suddenly gone.  Even a small leak will sink a boat! This one can be like running aground.

2.Chart your Costs

I’m a sailor and have been around boats all my life and a boat like a start-up businesses does not have room for leaks “boat sinkers”.Unbelievably, there are thousands of entrepreneurs that start a business without the foggiest idea of what their costs are going to be. It’s like setting sail with no idea of where you are heading just setting adrift you will get somewhere, but where? Either there is an estimation that is way overstated or understated. From the very beginning, you need to have a strong handle on knowing what you will need to get your business started and keep it running. Additionally, you need to have projections for your future success. Know your numbers and make sure they are accurate. Even a small leak will sink a boat!

1.Keep it Lean Keep it Green

I’m a sailor and have been around boats all my life and a boat like a start-up businesses does not have room for leaks “boat sinkers”. As an example, when first starting out, if you need some assistance, rather then hiring a permanent employee that may soon have nothing productive to do, that will involve salary, insurance, other benefits, etc., consider a temporary employee until the business grows. Keep improving the bottom line before you start adding on more expenses to your business. I enjoy boating especially sailing; even a small leak will sink a boat.
