Business Mindset Do You Have It?

Dan

Dan

There’s a funny thing that happens to people when they start their own online business. I’m not sure if it stems from the tendency for online marketers to use hype-filled sales letters with words like “quick” and “easy” or if it’s from misconceptions about working at home. Whatever the reason is, there are a lot of people out there who think that once they set up a website or even start thinking about starting an online business that money will start falling out of the sky!

You have to work to get ahead in life…and this even applies to working online. There are two types of people that start businesses online. There are those that either have the business experience to know that rewards only come from hard work and there are those that believe the hype and pretend to work instead of actually getting things done. If you’re in the second category, this is your wakeup call!

You are not going to find online business success by spending all of your time in forums. You’re not going to see those commission checks or Paypal deposits coming in by chasing down the next big idea online. You won’t see it by telling yourself that you deserve the afternoon off instead of doing what you should be doing on your path to online success.

The only way you are going to make your online business work is to work at it. Working for yourself requires a great deal of self discipline. If you don’t have self discipline, you’re going to need to build up that strength before you’ll see any success. You need a strong work ethic so you can do what you need to do, even if your favorite show is on or it’s a beautiful day to walk in the park.

The first step is to set clear reachable goals for yourself. Be sure to set goals that are realistic for the next week and the next month. Write down your goals somewhere near your workspace so you can keep yourself focused.

Next, you’re going to have to identify what is work and what is not. When you work online, you may develop a clever way of tricking yourself into thinking that you are working when you are not. Searching for your website’s name on Google or reading the latest blog post from your favorite motivational author is not working. Creating content, developing backlinks, writing a product or taking part in advertising is working. There is a lot of time for all of those other activities, but save them for after you’ve completed your goal for the day.

If you’re not used to being self disciplined, it may take some time and some practice for you to develop this skill. But it will be well worth it when you start seeing results from your efforts. As long as you remember that you have to work to get ahead online and keep your goals nearby, you’ll be able to get the work done that you need to.

The Obama Proof Investment

As the economy continues to barely survive on life support, it seems like there are more and more calls for nationalized government programs. For example, in the spring of 2009 President Obama proposed a 2010 takeover of 401ks and the implementation of nationalized pension plans.

No matter what your politics are, losing the investments that you put into your 401K is no walk in the park. This proposed change to the national budget is just another example of the turbulent times we live in. There is a lot of change on the horizon which may be difficult for some people to accept. Just as the forefathers of this nation faced a lot of uncertainty, many people think that our nation is facing the same type of crisis.

It makes sense to look back to the forefathers’ wisdom when facing these uncertain times. Ben Franklin, the great statesmen and founder of the nation, would have one piece of advice to those who are worried that Obama will take away independent 401Ks:

“An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”

If you are concerned about your investments, start investing in a place where the government can’t take it away. Education is the most powerful investment that you can make. Whether you are just starting out in your career or are facing retirement, you can make an investment in your own mind that will last a lifetime.

Education goes well beyond formal schooling. If you think that having a Master’s degree or PhD is what you need to make an investment in your mind, think again. Take Benjamin Franklin for example. He was well schooled in a variety of different subjects and always challenged himself to learn more. You should do the same.

Take it upon yourself to become more educated on subjects that interest you. Learn the secrets of managing money wisely from experts. Teach yourself how to cook your favorite meals at home. Become well versed in literary classics. Whatever you choose, your time will be well spent because you’ll be enriching your life and creating more wealth of experience for yourself and those around you.

One of the best ways to increase your education and create a sense of financial freedom is to invest in learning about owning your own business. Learning the skills you need to own your own business and taking steps toward creating a supplemental or full time income for yourself is one of the best investments of your time and money. Although you can definitely spend your time learning about anything that you want, you will be well rewarded from learning from others who have taken steps to develop a small business. To top it off, learning how to run a small business can set you on the path to financial freedom, which will further protect your investments and your financial well being.

To learn, simply model your success after others. Find experts in the field that you want to explore and begin learning from their successes and mistakes. In no time at all, you’ll be an expert at what you do.  And as Benjamin Franklin said “If a man empties his purse into his head, no one can take it from him.”

Create a focused work environment

When you own a home based business you may think that you can work in front of the television, around family or in an otherwise noisy environment. This is a surefire way for lowering your productivity. You need to train yourself to create a focused work environment so you can complete the work that you need to get done. Set up a dedicated work space and surround yourself with the items and conditions that you feel most comfortable with. For example, some people need silence in order to get work done, while others prefer music. Set yourself up for success and you’ll be more able to work quickly and accomplish your goals.

Think About the Rewards and Not the Struggle of Working

Often when someone sits down to work they feel overwhelmed by what they have to accomplish. They spend so much time worrying about how much work needs to be accomplished that they work themselves into a state of fear, which can prevent any work from taking place. If you find that this happens to you, you should focus on the rewards of being finished with your work. Imagine yourself spending the rest of the day with nothing on your plate. Picture the excitement you’ll feel knowing that you’ve met your goals for the day. The more you take pleasure in getting your work done, the more you’ll be motivated to finish your work quickly.

Set Clear Goals for Yourself

Have you ever spent an afternoon trying to work on your business only to find yourself a few hours later with nothing done? It’s probably because you didn’t have a clear goal in mind of what you’d like to get accomplished. The best thing you can do in order to maintain a good work ethic is have goals. You should have long term goals (like yearly or quarterly goals), mid-range goals (per month or per week) and short term goals (daily or hourly). The more specific you can get for your goals, the better. Many people make the mistake of setting a long range goal and then not breaking it down into small steps. If you set a goal for something as little as a few hours, you’ll find yourself more motivated to work. Be sure to track your goals and reward yourself by checking off your tasks as you finish them.
